Emergency crews scaled down a steep embankment along Northlake Mall Drive Friday morning, hauling a critically injured person up from the ravine below in a technical rope rescue. Charlotte Fire, MEDIC, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police all responded to the scene near Northlake Mall after emergency calls came in around 10:30 a.m.
According to WSOC-TV, crews executed a high-angle rope rescue to pull the person from the embankment, a maneuver that typically requires specialized rigging to safely haul someone up a steep incline. Aerial footage from Chopper 9 Skyzoom captured the extraction in progress, and the same footage showed a motorcycle lying on its side on the ground near the rescue site. Queen City News similarly reported that MEDIC officials responded to a traumatic injury call along Northlake Mall Drive just after 10 a.m., and that a motorcycle was observed at the scene.
Firefighters lowered the injured person from above, and Queen City News reported witnessing the individual being taken away on a stretcher with life-threatening injuries. It remains unclear what initiated the fall into the embankment, and neither fire officials nor police had released a formal collision report at the time of publication. Whether a motorcycle crash preceded the fall or something else caused the person to end up in the ravine has not been confirmed by either agency.
A Technical Rescue Built for Steep Terrain
The operation relied on specialized rope-rescue training by Charlotte Fire ladder companies, according to the City of Charlotte. That training was on display Friday as crews used a rope system to bring the victim up safely rather than risk further injury during a more improvised extraction.
It is the kind of complex, high-stakes response Charlotte Fire has carried out more than once in recent months. In August, 30 Charlotte firefighters brought an apartment fire under control on Heathstead Place in South Charlotte in just over 20 minutes, rescuing a resident who suffered life-threatening injuries, as Hoodline previously reported. Friday's rescue underscores how often the department's technical rescue crews are called into action for critical, life-threatening situations along Charlotte's busy corridors.
A Ring Road With a Troubled Recent History

The block has drawn police attention before. In December, CMPD's North Division officers arrested four suspects and recovered five firearms, including stolen handguns and burglary tools, during a vehicle break-in response in the 6900 block of Northlake Mall Drive, a case Hoodline covered in a prior report on the arrests. Years earlier, in March 2023, Spinoso Real Estate Group and CMPD announced increased off-duty police patrol visibility, firearm-detection K-9 patrols, and upgrades to more than 140 cameras at Northlake Mall after three shootings over 75 days, according to The Charlotte Post.
A Mall Property Still Finding Its Footing
The rescue also lands amid a broader story of financial turbulence at Northlake Mall itself. Georgia-based developer Hull Property Group purchased the 1.06 million-square-foot mall for $39 million in a court-approved sale out of receivership in March 2025, per WFAE. The mall entered receivership in 2021 after defaulting on its mortgage.
For now, the cause of Friday's fall remains unresolved, and Queen City News noted the story was still developing as of its last update. No additional details on the victim's condition or the circumstances leading up to the rescue had been released by CMPD or Charlotte Fire at the time of publication.
