A 71-year-old Clarksville man is behind bars after police say a tip received in July 2026 led investigators to uncover a pattern of alleged child sexual abuse, along with additional victims as the case unfolded. Jerry Helbig was arrested on Wednesday, September 2, and booked into the Clark County Detention Center in Jeffersonville on charges of child molestation, sexual battery, and neglect of a dependent.
The investigation began when the Clarksville Police Department received a tip about Helbig sexually abusing a child, according to WLKY. As detectives dug into the case over the following weeks, they discovered more victims, the department said. Helbig's booking photo was released by the Clark County Jail, and he remains held at the Jeffersonville facility, which serves as the primary county lockup for people arrested by Clarksville police and other local agencies, per the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Chief Says Case Will Stick With Officers
Clarksville Police Chief Nate Walls praised his officers for their work building the case against Helbig, saying they “did an outstanding job” investigating the allegations. Walls, the department's chief, also acknowledged the emotional toll this kind of case can take on investigators, saying cases like these “really stick with you,” according to the station's report. Walls previously established a dedicated narcotics division within the department funded by asset seizures, according to WHAS11.
Open questions remain about how many additional victims investigators identified and their ages, as well as the exact felony levels the Clark County Prosecutor's Office will formally file. All allegations against Helbig remain unproven accusations unless and until they are adjudicated in court.
What Helbig Could Face Under Indiana Law

The sexual battery charge is among the counts listed against Helbig.
