A Cincinnati police officer was assaulted early Wednesday in the parking lot of a White Castle off Central Parkway in Clifton, and the suspect fled the scene and remains at large. The officer was checked out by the Cincinnati Fire Department at the scene, and nobody was taken to the hospital.
According to FOX19, the encounter unfolded during the officer's contact with a suspect early Wednesday, and police have said the officer is okay following the assault. The White Castle sits at 3030 Central Parkway, a location that runs as a 24-hour fast-food spot along the busy corridor, according to White Castle. Officers combed the area near the restaurant searching for the suspect, but police have released no other details about what led to the confrontation or what happened during it.
Investigators did recover one piece of evidence: the blue vehicle connected to the assault. Police recovered the car from a motel parking lot. Available reports do not identify the motel or explain what happened to the suspect afterward.
Where the Assault Fits Under Ohio Law
Ohio law treats an assault differently once a peace officer is the target. Simple assault is generally a first-degree misdemeanor, but under Ohio Revised Code § 2903.13, knowingly causing or attempting to cause physical harm to a peace officer performing official duties bumps the charge up to a fourth-degree felony, punishable by six to 18 months in prison, per the Ohio Legislative Service Commission.
If a deadly weapon or serious physical harm was involved, prosecutors could pursue an even steeper charge. Ohio Revised Code § 2903.11 describes ordinary felonious assault as a second-degree felony punishable by two to eight years, according to the Gounaris Abboud LPA. Whether prosecutors will file the lesser or greater charge likely depends on how the suspect's blue vehicle factored into the struggle, along with any medical findings once the suspect is identified and caught.
A Corridor Without Its Own Police District
