A verbal argument between a bicyclist and a pedestrian at a Central Avenue bus stop in Colonie erupted into violence on Sept. 24, when the cyclist allegedly pulled out what looked like a box cutter and stabbed the other man before pedaling away. The suspect, 46-year-old Colonie resident Rasaun T. Kornegay, later turned himself in to investigators and now faces a slate of serious charges, including second-degree attempted murder.
Police responded at around 2:30 p.m. to the CDTA bus stop on Central Avenue, situated between Colonie Center Mall and Northway Mall, according to The Daily Gazette. A separate account from CBS6 Albany put the response time at about 2:34 p.m. that same afternoon. Witnesses told officers that a bicyclist riding on the sidewalk near the stop got into a verbal altercation with a pedestrian, and during the confrontation, the bicyclist pulled what appeared to be a box cutter and stabbed the victim before fleeing, per the station's report.
According to Newport Dispatch, police arrived to find a male victim suffering lacerations to his face and neck. Officers provided medical assistance before Colonie EMS arrived at the scene and transported the victim to Albany Medical Center Hospital. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and he has since been released after treatment.
Investigators Track Down a Suspect With No Known Connection to the Victim
Police said there was no indication that Kornegay and the victim knew each other before the stabbing occurred, per the same account from CBS6 Albany. Investigators worked to identify the bicyclist by reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses and processing evidence collected at the scene, according to the station's report.
That work led police to obtain an image of the suspect, which they shared with nearby law enforcement agencies and the public in hopes of generating leads, the outlet reported. Information from the public ultimately helped investigators identify the suspect as Kornegay, and he later turned himself in to investigators rather than being taken into custody by force.
Search Warrant Executed, Multiple Charges Filed
Investigators also executed a search warrant at Kornegay's residence, where they recovered additional evidence that is being processed as part of the ongoing investigation, per the same CBS6 Albany report. Newport Dispatch reports that Kornegay was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, third-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Kornegay was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility without bail, according to Newport Dispatch. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue processing the evidence recovered from his home.
