A Colorado State Penitentiary inmate was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2022 death of fellow prisoner Samuel Garcia, a case that follows a separately reported assault at the same prison the year before. Dominik Jaramillo, 29, was found guilty by a jury Monday, and sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 17, the Canon City Daily Record reported.
A separate earlier assault at the same prison
In August 2021, the Denver Post reported that Glen Young assaulted Gerado Banda at Colorado State Penitentiary in an attack that lasted about 15 seconds. That was a separate incident, involving one reported assailant; Garcia’s case concerned a group assault in June 2022. These two cases provide examples, not evidence of an increase in assaults or proof of a connection between them.
What jurors heard about Garcia’s death
Garcia, 49, was attacked in a prison day hall on June 21, 2022. The Daily Record’s account of surveillance footage and an investigator’s affidavit describes six men charged in connection with the assault, including Jaramillo. The affidavit said several men punched Garcia and that a medical crutch was used to strike him; the crutch later broke into pieces. Garcia was taken to hospitals and died on June 28. An autopsy attributed his death to blunt-force head trauma from the assault, according to the report.
The case has had different outcomes for other defendants. The Daily Record reported that Ricardo Castro received four years of stipulated supervised probation in January 2024, with up to 20 years in prison possible if probation is revoked. It also reported prison sentences for Miguel Alvarado and Drew Anderson. Jaramillo’s conviction is the latest reported development; the available account does not specify the outcomes for every person charged.
