The incident was first reported by FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth, which said the concrete came down from the Lovers Lane overpass onto the expressway lanes below. It remains unclear what caused the concrete to fall, and there is no confirmation yet of how much debris came down, whether any vehicles were struck, or whether the lanes were closed for repairs.
No official statement has been issued by the Texas Department of Transportation, Dallas police, or any other government agency addressing the cause of the failure or a repair timeline for the overpass.
Earlier Incidents on Dallas-Area Roads
In a separate incident, a pothole on eastbound U.S. Highway 175 at Seagoville Road dropped concrete debris onto northbound Seagoville Road below, according to fox4news.com. That report described a hole large enough that motorists could see straight through the overpass to the roadway beneath it.
The report noted that Texas Department of Transportation crews blocked off lanes on both roads to make repairs during Friday morning rush hour. At the time, there was no word yet on when the repair work would be completed, per the same account.
Other Reported Overpass Incidents
Chunks of concrete from the Houston School Road overpass reportedly fell onto I-20 in South Dallas back in 2013, bringing traffic to a standstill and forcing emergency repairs, according to NBC DFW.
A more severe episode unfolded in 2015, when two massive concrete beams fell onto I-35 between Dallas and Austin after a truck struck down a beam. That collapse killed one person and injured three others, according to ABC News.
Those earlier cases are not confirmed to be connected to Wednesday's incident on the Central Expressway, and no cause has been established for the Lovers Lane overpass debris. Drivers passing beneath the overpass should expect updates as more information becomes available.
