A disturbance call on Loon Lane in Covington turned violent late Tuesday night, and by the time investigators pieced together what happened, a 30-year-old man was behind bars facing felony charges. Edwin Jones was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and tampering with evidence after police say he admitted to stabbing another man during the confrontation.
Covington officers were dispatched to a house on Loon Lane around 10 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a disturbance, according to WREG. Around the same time, a stabbing victim from that same Loon Lane incident showed up at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton seeking treatment. He told officers he had been stabbed by a male suspect who then fled the area, and officers were unable to locate the suspect at the scene that night.
Investigators Zero In On a Suspect
From there, the case moved quickly. Investigators identified Jones as the suspect and brought him in for questioning, and police say he admitted to stabbing the victim. A vehicle was also recovered as part of the investigation, though the report does not specify what role the vehicle played in the case.
Covington Police Chief Donna Turner addressed the seriousness of the incident while noting how it could have ended much worse. “This case turned violent quickly and we are blessed that it was not fatal,” Turner said, per the same report.
Felony Charges and What Comes Next
Jones now faces two felony charges: aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. Tennessee's tampering statute, Tennessee Code § 39-16-503, makes it a crime to knowingly alter, destroy or conceal evidence with intent to impair its availability during a pending investigation or official proceeding, and a violation is classified as a Class C felony.
Jones is scheduled to appear in Tipton County court on September 29. Covington police are asking anyone with information related to the investigation to contact the department's Criminal Investigations Division at (901) 475-1261.
