Crescent Ballroom is turning 15, and the downtown Phoenix venue is marking the occasion with an all-day party spread across two stages on October 3, starting at 3 p.m. The lineup features 15 local artists, including 10 bands and four DJs, alongside trivia and karaoke hosted by Corey G.
The celebration, first reported by Phoenix New Times, calls back to the venue's opening on October 3, 2011. Since then, Crescent Ballroom has hosted thousands of shows and become, in the outlet's words, a hub of music and nightlife in downtown Phoenix. The anniversary lineup includes Pariah Pete, Sweetbleeders, Djents, Sean Watson, Las Calakas, Practically People, Tournament, Vinyl Station, Jerusafunk, Hartbreaks, Winston Williams, MRCH, Samuel L Cool Jay and Mitch Freedom.
A Garage-Turned-Ballroom With Deep Roots
Long before it became a live-music mainstay, the building at Second Avenue and Van Buren Street was the 1917 F.L. Hart Garage, an automotive repair shop along historic U.S. Highway 80 that later served as headquarters for the Arizona Awning Company starting in 1945, according to Crescent Ballroom's own account. The single-story brick structure with wood roof trusses remains a preserved example of early 20th-century commercial architecture in Phoenix. When it reopened as a concert venue on October 3, 2011, with a sold-out show by indie band Blind Pilot, it hosted 707 musical artists across 367 shows in its first full year, according to a historical account cited by Downtown Phoenix Inc.
Today the venue holds roughly 500 to 550 people in its main performance hall, plus another 300 in its attached lounge, per Relentless Beats. Over 15 years, per the Phoenix New Times report on the anniversary, Crescent Ballroom has hosted over 10,000 bands, dance troupes, authors, DJs and weddings. Owner Charlie Levy says he hopes people from the Phoenix area and beyond turn out for the anniversary party, according to the same report.
From Solo Promoter to Downtown Anchor
Levy's history with Arizona music promotion stretches back to his time as an Arizona State University student in the early 1990s, before he founded independent promotion firm Stateside Presents in 1995, according to PHOENIX Magazine. He named the venue Crescent Ballroom as a nod both to his hometown of New Orleans, the “Crescent City,” and to historic Phoenix crescent moon emblem imagery, according to Downtown Phoenix Inc.'s history of the local music scene. Stephen Chilton, now affiliated with Psyko Steve Presents, served as the venue's original booker; the booking manager role is currently held by Taylor, per the anniversary lineup report from Phoenix New Times.
Crescent Ballroom's success led Levy to expand downtown Phoenix's live music footprint further, opening the 250-capacity basement lounge Valley Bar in 2015 and the 1,900-capacity Van Buren in 2017. That trio of venues, according to reporting cited by Downtown Phoenix Inc., allowed touring acts to grow within the local market across different stages of their careers, with Crescent Ballroom becoming a focal point for live music downtown. In April 2021, Live Nation acquired full ownership of Stateside Presents and The Van Buren from Levy following pandemic closures, while Levy retained independent ownership of Crescent Ballroom and Valley Bar, according to the Phoenix New Times.
Cocina 10 and a Growing Arizona Footprint
Part of what has set Crescent Ballroom apart from typical concert venues is its attached restaurant, Cocina 10, which serves a Mexican-American menu originally crafted through a collaboration with James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Bianco of Pizzeria Bianco and chef Doug Robson of Gallo Blanco. Levy sought to build a full scratch kitchen offering quality dining rather than standard venue concessions, a detail highlighted in Phoenix New Times' coverage of the restaurant.
Levy's venue-building hasn't stopped at Phoenix's borders. In late 2025, he partnered with promoter David Slutes to launch La Rosa, a 750-capacity music and arts venue inside a renovated historic monastery in Tucson, as reported by Pollstar News. During Crescent Ballroom's 10th anniversary in 2021, former Phoenix Mayor and U.S. Representative Greg Stanton said the venue's opening was as vital to downtown Phoenix's urban revitalization as any major commercial investment in the city, according to Downtown Phoenix Inc.
Early-bird tickets for the 15th-anniversary party are priced at $15 and are on sale now, with tickets available through the Crescent Ballroom website. Hoodline previously named the venue a top Phoenix music spot for its live shows, lounge and Mexican food.
