Jacksonville is starting Thursday under cloudy skies and a stiff north wind, with temperatures in the mid-70s. The bigger concern is along the coast, where dangerous rip currents, high surf and minor flooding around high tide are expected.
Wind, Surf And Coastal Flooding Lead Thursday
Temperatures should rise only to around 80 degrees Thursday. North winds are forecast at 12 to 18 mph inland and 15 to 25 mph along the coast, with coastal gusts of 30 to 35 mph. A few showers may move along the Northeast Florida shoreline, with brief heavy downpours possible near the Interstate 95 corridor, according to the National Weather Service.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect through at least Friday night, and minor coastal flooding is expected around high tides. The high rip-current risk is expected to continue through Saturday, making this a poor stretch for casual swimming or surfing.
Beach Plans Need A Rethink
Swimmers should stay near a lifeguard and avoid entering the water if conditions look rough. Anyone caught in a rip current should float, avoid swimming directly against it and move parallel to shore when possible. Minor coastal flooding is expected around high tide.
Friday And Saturday Turn Cooler And Drier
Friday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 80, but north winds will remain brisk, with gusts near 25 mph. Friday-night lows are expected to range from 55 to 60 degrees inland to the low to mid-60s along the coast. Saturday looks sunnier and slightly warmer at around 81, followed by a notably cool low near 62.
