DeKalb County police are investigating a death reported near Ravenwood Way and Fisher Trail, where officers found at least one person dead and a Volkswagen with a shattered rear window in a driveway, according to WSB-TV Channel 2. The overnight response was first reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The damage appeared potentially consistent with gunfire, but investigators had not said that a shooting occurred or whether foul play was suspected. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office arrived at about 2:30 a.m., roughly two hours after officers were called shortly after midnight. Authorities had not publicly identified the person who died or released a cause or manner of death.
A separate crash nearby
The death investigation follows another emergency response in the same general area, but the incidents are not reported as connected. On Sept. 4, 2026, a passenger car ran a red light at Briarcliff Road and Fisher Trail and struck a DeKalb County school bus carrying 30 Lakeside High School students. Five students were taken to a hospital, Atlanta News First reported.
That traffic case involved a reported intersection collision, while the current inquiry concerns a death at or near a residence and a damaged vehicle. The earlier crash does not establish anything about the cause of the death under investigation.
A prior fatal case on Briarcliff Road
The area also has a separate documented fatality case from Oct. 17, 2023. Atlanta News First reported that police found three people dead in the 3100 block of Briarcliff Road and described the circumstances as a possible murder-suicide. That was a daytime investigation involving three victims, making it materially different from the current single-death inquiry near Ravenwood Way and Fisher Trail.
Countywide trend does not classify this death
Countywide data provides broader background but does not determine what happened at Fisher Trail. The DeKalb County CEO's Office said homicides were down 34% year to date as of June 22, 2025. That figure predates the current investigation and does not establish that the death was a homicide or that it was related to any other case.
The DeKalb County Police Department's 2025 annual report also says the county launched a Real Time Crime Center in 2025. The report does not say whether that system was used in the Fisher Trail investigation.
What remains to be determined
The key unresolved questions are whether the shattered window resulted from gunfire, how the person died, whether the death was accidental, natural or criminal, and whether police will classify the case as a homicide. The medical examiner's review and the police investigation are expected to provide those determinations; none had been released in the initial report.
