Denver Police say a shooting in the 1900 block of East Colfax Avenue sent one victim to the hospital early Saturday morning, with investigators still working to piece together who pulled the trigger. Officers were called to the scene and located the victim before transporting them for medical treatment, according to the department’s alert.
In a post shared on the social platform X, Denver Police Dept. confirmed it was investigating the shooting and that it had located one victim and transported them to the hospital. The department said its investigators are working to develop suspect information and pledged to post updates to the same thread as they become available. As of the alert, no arrests or suspect descriptions had been released.
The department’s statement carried a standard disclaimer noting the information is subject to change based on investigative findings, and it directed anyone with an active emergency to call or text 911. A Corridor Under Repeated Strain
The 1900 block sits in central Denver’s City Park West and Cheesman Park area near Race and Vine streets, roughly two miles east of downtown, according to the Denver Gazette. The block mixes commercial retail, convenience stores, and residential properties, and it isn’t the first time this stretch has drawn police attention — in December 2018, Denver Police investigated a fatal homicide in the same block near a 7-Eleven during a weekend string of citywide shootings, as reported by Patch at the time.
Hoodline has covered a string of shootings along the East Colfax corridor in recent months, including a nonfatal shooting on North Willow Street in early August that sent a victim to the hospital, and reports of shots fired near Tamarac and Colfax later that month. Those incidents followed a fatal shooting at a Colfax Avenue gas station in early August that also left a Golden police officer wounded, and a fatal shooting at East Colfax Avenue and Dahlia Street during a bloody overnight stretch in June that left one person dead across four separate shootings, as per Hoodline.
Homicides Climbing Even As Overall Crime Dips
The shooting comes amid a citywide surge in homicides that has alarmed Denver officials this year. Denver homicides increased by roughly 37% to 40% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, even as overall crime across the city fell by about 0.5%, according to Axios. That uptick broke a sharp decline in fatal violence the year before — Denver recorded just 37 homicides in 2025, a 48% drop from 70 in 2024 and the city’s second-lowest population-adjusted homicide rate since 1990, per the Denver Police Department.
Police District 6, which covers central Colfax Avenue and downtown Denver, accounts for 25% of the city’s total violent crime victims and was the only police district to see an uptick in violent crime between 2024 and 2025, according to Colorado Politics. In response to the citywide rise in homicides, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas rolled out a Violence Suppression Action Plan in July, featuring dedicated overnight violence response teams and expanded place-network investigations across the city’s police districts, the Denver Gazette reported.
Construction And Long-Term Investment Along Colfax
The 1900 block also sits within active construction zones tied to Denver’s $300 million East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit project, which began major infrastructure work in 2024 and plans provisional bus lane usage between Broadway and Colorado Boulevard starting this year, according to RTD. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced plans in April to rebuild the District 6 police headquarters at East Colfax Avenue and Washington Street alongside affordable workforce housing, an effort meant to boost police presence along the corridor, per Mile High CRE. The City of Denver has also partnered with local organizations to offer small business relief grants of up to $15,000 to Colfax merchants coping with construction disruptions and safety concerns, Denver7 has reported.
