Firefighters responding to a reported explosion at a commercial building on Northlawn, just south of Plymouth Road on Detroit's west side, found someone inside with burns and rushed them to the hospital. By the time crews arrived, there was no fire or smoke left to fight — just a mystery about what had actually happened.
According to ClickOnDetroit, the Detroit Fire Department said the person found inside the building was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for burn treatment. Local 4 crews who reached the scene reported seeing no smoke or flames, leaving the precise cause of the blast unclear even as the injured victim was transported. One person was hospitalized in total, per the station's report.
Detroit Receiving Hospital is home to an American Burn Association-verified adult burn center in Detroit and one of just three dedicated adult burn facilities statewide. The hospital also has hyperbaric and hydrotherapy capabilities. The hospital operates as a Level I Trauma Center with hyperbaric and hydrotherapy capabilities built specifically for complex thermal injuries.
Investigators Face a Familiar Puzzle

That determination remains pending for the Northlawn building, and several basic facts about the site are still unknown. It is not yet clear whether the building was occupied at the time of the blast, whether DTE Gas had any recent service calls or open leak reports at that address, or whether the fire marshal will need to order an emergency demolition if the structure sustained hidden damage.

Michigan's aging gas infrastructure adds another layer of context, though nothing in this case has been tied to it directly. This is not the first time this year that a reported explosion at a Detroit-area structure has ended with a burn victim. In March, a reported explosion near a vacant building on Brainard Street turned out to be a portable propane heater fire that killed one person and severely burned another, as Hoodline previously reported.
For now, the cause of the Northlawn blast remains officially undetermined, and the extent of the hospitalized victim's injuries has not been disclosed. Whether investigators ultimately point to a gas leak, a pressurized canister, or another source will likely shape how the city responds to the commercial corridor on Detroit's west side.
