A driver was critically injured after a crash involving a 15-year-old girl fleeing Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies early Friday, according to KCRA. KCRA reported that the teen was also hospitalized; another driver involved in the collision was not injured.
The collision happened at West El Camino Avenue and El Centro Road, where the girl’s vehicle struck two other vehicles, KCRA reported. Deputies had tried to stop the car near West El Camino Avenue and Interstate 80 after noticing it was being driven without its lights on. The pursuit began at about 2:12 a.m.
Statewide pursuit data offer context, not a verdict
The crash is one local incident; statewide figures show the broader scale of pursuit-related collisions. The California Highway Patrol reported 11,985 police pursuits in California in 2022, of which 2,275, or 19%, resulted in a crash. In that year’s pursuit-related injury crashes, 406 uninvolved third parties were injured, according to the CHP report.
Those statewide totals do not establish how the Sacramento crash compares with other pursuits or whether deputies’ decisions in this case were appropriate. The sheriff’s office has not released further details about the crash investigation or the reason for the attempted stop. KCRA reported that the teen was medically cleared before being booked into juvenile hall.
