She was ejected from her vehicle and transported to a local hospital, though accounts differed on whether she was pronounced dead there less than an hour later or later died on scene, while the semitruck driver walked away without reported injuries.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report cited by FOX 2, the woman's vehicle had stalled in the roadway when a 52-year-old man from Alton, Illinois, driving a semitruck, struck it. The impact sent the semitruck spinning into the concrete median. The woman was ejected from her vehicle and transported to a local hospital.
FOX 2 reported that she was pronounced dead less than an hour later, according to officials. A separate account from First Alert 4 described the sequence differently, reporting that paramedics transported the woman to a hospital and that she later died on scene. The two outlets' timelines of her death do not fully align, and neither has been reconciled publicly.
Lanes Shut Down as Crews Cleared the Scene
Three left lanes of northbound I-270 were closed as crews worked the scene, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation figures cited by First Alert 4's report. The road has since reopened to traffic.
The semitruck driver was not reported injured, per the same account. One person was killed overall in the two-vehicle crash, which occurred overnight Monday in St. Louis County, Missouri, as FOX 2 reported.
A Familiar Danger on This Stretch of Highway
Stalled vehicles on I-270 have proven fatal before. In October 2020, Mauricio Amore Ferreira, a Bayer Crop Science executive, died two days after another vehicle struck his stalled car near Creve Coeur on I-270, according to a report from FOX 2. In 2017, an Arnold man was killed on the same interstate in Sunset Hills while trying to push a stalled vehicle out of traffic, according to a report from The Leader.
What caused the woman's pickup to stall in the first place has not been disclosed in either report, and investigators have not released additional details on the circumstances leading up to the crash.
