A mother and her two daughters are facing felony charges after East Point police say they diverted more than $65,000 in rent payments from apartment tenants, leaving families flagged as delinquent and, in at least one case, evicted. Cynthia Dorsey, Destiny Dorsey and Christia Smith were arrested on charges connected to a rent fraud scheme that investigators say ran for months at Fulton Pointe Apartments on Washington Road.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the East Point police investigation began in August 2026 after a former Fulton Pointe tenant reported that rent money orders had been altered and used for expenses that had nothing to do with the property. Investigators say they eventually identified more than 120 missing or altered money orders tied to the scheme, totaling more than $65,000 in losses. Police allege the money was either deposited into personal bank accounts, altered outright, or spent on personal purchases — including wedding-related services, per the same account.
The scheme is alleged to have affected more than 60 tenants at the East Point complex, according to eastpointga.com, which reports the family intercepted money orders and rent checks intended for property management and redirected the funds into their own pockets. That outlet says the fallout was swift: property management flagged the victimized residents as delinquent, triggering a wave of evictions.
A Newborn, a Hospitalized Mother, and an Eviction Notice
One of those residents, Kayla Sherrod, told WSB-TV that she was evicted from her apartment alongside her newborn baby while her mother was hospitalized recovering from a stroke, as reported by WSB-TV Channel 2 - Atlanta. The eviction notice served to Sherrod listed suspect Destiny Dorsey as the plaintiff.

Arrests, Charges and an Ongoing Search for a Fugitive
Arrest warrants for Christia Smith, Destiny Dorsey and Cynthia Dorsey were issued on September 14, per FOX 5 Atlanta. On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Smith and Destiny Dorsey were arrested in Stockbridge, Georgia, in a joint operation involving the East Point Police Department, its fugitive unit and Stockbridge police. Cynthia Dorsey was arrested separately on September 17. All three were booked into the Fulton County Jail and were charged with computer forgery, fourth-degree forgery, identity theft, money laundering, theft by taking and conspiracy, as noted by 11Alive.

FOX 5 Atlanta additionally reported that initial court appearance dates and bond details had not yet been released for the three defendants, and police had not specified the exact job titles or employment relationship the women held with the property management company.

Police told FOX 5 Atlanta they had not confirmed a final dollar amount or total victim count and said they are working with financial institutions and property management companies as the investigation continues, with plans to identify additional victims.
