A Sunrise family says they were relaxing in front of the television when a thunderous crash outside sent an SUV plowing through their yard, into a trash can, a parked car, and finally the outer wall of their own house. Sunrise police say an elderly man behind the wheel experienced a medical emergency and lost control of the vehicle just before 7:30 p.m. on Northwest 11th Place, damaging multiple parked cars and a home before the SUV had to be towed from the scene.
Carolina Rocha told WSVN that she and her husband were inside watching TV when they heard a very loud bang. By the time they got outside, the SUV had struck a car parked in her driveway before continuing on to hit two more vehicles parked next door, leaving both of the family's cars crashed and totaled, she said. The impact also damaged the outer wall of the Rochas' home.
Sunrise police said one person was taken to Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital following the crash, and that the driver was conscious and breathing at the time of transport, according to the same report. Cleveland Clinic Weston, the facility that received the patient, was ranked the top hospital in South Florida and 48th nationally by Newsweek in 2025, according to Cleveland Clinic Florida, and operates as a 24-hour facility specializing in emergency and specialized care in western Broward County.
Family Left Scrambling After Losing Both Vehicles
Rocha said her family was safe despite the crash, but she told the outlet she was unsure how she and her husband would manage getting to work and driving their daughter to school with both cars now totaled. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown beyond authorities' account that the elderly driver suffered a sudden medical emergency behind the wheel.
That authorities' framing points toward what Florida law calls the sudden medical emergency doctrine, under which a driver who experiences an unexpected cardiac episode, seizure, or loss of consciousness and loses control of the vehicle may be shielded from civil negligence liability if the episode was sudden and truly unforeseeable, according to Smith, Ball, Báez & Prather. Drivers who invoke that defense carry the burden of proving they had no prior symptoms or warnings, the firm notes.
Property Damage Could Fall Outside No-Fault Coverage
That legal standard matters for families like the Rochas because Florida's no-fault insurance system was built primarily around medical costs, not busted cars and cracked walls. State law requires vehicle owners to carry Personal Injury Protection coverage under Florida Statute § 627.736, covering up to $10,000 in emergency medical bills regardless of fault, but leaving victims with vehicle and structural property damage to rely on their own property insurance or a third-party claim, per Tragos Law.

Sunrise police, who operate out of a 109,000-square-foot Public Safety Complex on West Oakland Park Boulevard housing the city's 911 Dispatch Center, have handled other serious crashes in recent months. Hoodline previously reported on a crash near Sawgrass Mills in March in which a driver struck three pedestrians, killing one and injuring two. The department has not released further details on the Northwest 11th Place crash, including the driver's identity or exact medical diagnosis.
