A routine Saturday crossing on a busy Sunrise roadway ended in tragedy when a woman was fatally struck by a vehicle on West Commercial Boulevard near Northwest 102nd Avenue, police said. Emergency crews rushed her to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries. Sunrise police have launched an investigation into the crash.
According to WSVN, a gray SUV hit the woman as she crossed the road, and the driver remained at the scene and spoke with officers. The station reported that first responders transported the victim to Broward Health Medical Center and that investigators were still working the case.
Recent Pedestrian Crashes In Sunrise
This latest death comes on the heels of a deadly March crash near the Sawgrass Mills shopping district, where a vehicle struck three pedestrians, killing one and injuring two, authorities said. NBC6 reported at the time that Sunrise police investigators remained on scene for hours as they processed the area.
Statewide Pedestrian Toll
Florida continues to grapple with one of the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the country. Data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows that in 2023, pedestrians were involved in more than 10,200 crashes statewide, leading to over 779 deaths and more than 1,400 serious injuries. The agency notes that multi-lane arterial roads like West Commercial Boulevard pose particular risks for people on foot.
Investigation Ongoing
Sunrise police said the driver in Saturday's crash stayed at the scene, but officials have not released the victim's name or additional details, WSVN reported. No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains active.
