An elderly woman has died after a cement truck rolled over and collided with passenger vehicles on Mars-Evans City Road in Adams Township on Thursday, Sept. 17. The woman was transported to a hospital after the crash near the intersection of Evans City and Myoma roads, but she did not survive her injuries.
The woman succumbed to her injuries after being taken to AHN Wexford Hospital, according to Callery Volunteer Fire Company officials cited by cranberryeagle.com. As of Sept. 18, she had not yet been identified. The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m., and two other passenger vehicles were reportedly involved, according to butlereagle.com.
The cement truck driver managed to exit the vehicle without assistance, while the driver of a Subaru involved in the crash and an elderly passenger were both transported to a hospital. The same report notes the Subaru sustained heavy front-end damage in the collision. Separately, WPXI reported that first responders arrived to find the concrete truck lying on its side, with an elderly patient trapped inside one of the passenger vehicles, according to fire officials.
Crews Worked to Free Trapped Passenger
Callery Volunteer Fire Co. responded to the scene at 2:14 p.m., per the fire company, and crews had to remove the passenger vehicle's driver's-side door to free the trapped occupant before transporting the elderly patient to waiting medics, WPXI reported. The station also reported that one person involved in the crash died before first responders left the scene. Callery VFC said in a statement that its thoughts were with the families, friends and everyone affected by the incident.
The rollover sent the truck's load spilling across the roadway, according to the same report from cranberryeagle.com. The spill covered part of Mars-Evans City Road, per butlereagle.com's account, forcing a lengthy shutdown as crews worked to clear both wreckage and concrete from the pavement.
Road Closed for Five Hours During Cleanup
The affected stretch of Mars-Evans City Road was closed to traffic from shortly after 2 p.m. until about 7:15 p.m., butlereagle.com reported. Emergency personnel remained on scene for the full five hours before reopening the road, according to the report from cranberryeagle.com.
McGann & Chester Towing and Heavy Duty removed the cement truck from the roadway, and PennDOT lent equipment to scrape the spilled concrete off the pavement, per the same source. Adams Township police, the Adams Area Fire District and the Evans City Area Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene alongside Callery Volunteer Fire Co.
Butler County emergency services dispatch initially reported that no serious injuries resulted from the crash, according to butlereagle.com, a detail that stands in contrast to the later confirmation of the woman's death. The reason for that discrepancy has not been addressed publicly.
