A 46-year-old man is recovering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the lower limbs outside a home on Spring Street in Ellenville. Police responded to 15 Spring St. around 3:25 p.m. Tuesday and found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds before he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The shooting was reported by News10 ABC, which noted that New York State Police said there is no immediate danger to the public as the investigation continues. No suspect has been publicly identified or taken into custody, and investigators have not released a motive. Witnesses are asked to call the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (845) 344-5300.
The Spring Street shooting remains under active investigation.
A Village Without Its Own Dispatchers
The shooting came days after Ellenville replaced its police dispatchers with an AI answering system, according to Mid Hudson News.
The dispatch overhaul traces back to budget pressure the Village Board confronted in the spring. The Village Board approved a 7.3% property tax increase in May. The village faced financial strain as it planned to phase out police dispatch. Village leaders described the municipality's operations at the time as barebones.
Second Shooting of the Summer
Tuesday's shooting marks the second reported gunfire incident in Ellenville in less than two months. The Shawangunk Journal reported that a July 20 shooting on Market Street triggered an active investigation by local police and New York State Police, a case that remains part of the same pattern of firearm incidents the village has seen this summer.
In April, 28-year-old Michael David Carman was extradited from Florida on a second-degree murder charge after an Ellenville woman was found dead, according to HV1. The case involved an investigation into an Ellenville woman's death.
Just days before the Spring Street shooting, Ulster County saw another violent crime case make headlines when 47-year-old William F. Dearden was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal September shooting of his fiancée in Esopus. Dearden was remanded without bail to the Ulster County Law Enforcement Center, underscoring the string of gun violence prosecutions the county has processed in recent months.
Regional Investigations Have Converged on Ellenville
Ellenville has also figured into cases that reached beyond its borders. Shlomo Patchiav was convicted in May of an extortion conspiracy linked to an Ellenville murder case, per Hoodline's earlier coverage of the case. Justin Torres, 37, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for his role in a drug-trafficking conspiracy.
State funding has been directed at curbing gun violence. The Office of Governor Kathy Hochul has announced statewide Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative funding.
Ellenville's emergency medical infrastructure has also been tested by other recent crises in the area. In July, a 35-year-old inmate at Eastern Correctional Facility in neighboring Wawarsing died following a cell fire and was pronounced dead at Ellenville Regional Hospital, a facility that serves surrounding towns during major regional emergencies. No arrests have been announced in Tuesday's shooting, and the investigation by New York State Police remains ongoing.
