A domestic dispute at a south Tulsa apartment complex turned violent Sunday morning when a woman’s ex-boyfriend climbed onto her balcony and broke through a window to get inside, and her current boyfriend opened fire, shooting him once in the leg. The woman’s child was also in the apartment when the confrontation erupted.
Tulsa police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call around 8:50 a.m. Sunday at an apartment near 66th Place and Victor Avenue, according to KOKH. The woman had called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend was at her door threatening to break in if she didn’t open it, the station reported. She was inside with her child and her current boyfriend at the time.
Rather than waiting at the door, the ex-boyfriend went around to the balcony. Police said he used the railing on an exterior staircase to jump up onto the balcony, then forced open a window and began climbing into the apartment, according to News on 6. That's when the woman’s current boyfriend shot him once in the leg.
Suspect Rushed to Hospital, Expected to Survive
Officers who arrived on scene applied a tourniquet to the man’s upper-leg gunshot wound before EMSA crews took him to Saint Francis Hospital, the station reported. He was described as alert and talking at the time he was transported. The same report noted police believe he is expected to survive his injuries.
KOKH’s account similarly confirmed the suspect was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities said that once he is released, he will face a first-degree burglary complaint, and the report from News on 6 added that police expect to arrest him after his hospital discharge.
A Pattern Seen Beyond Tulsa
Confrontations between exes and new partners that turn deadly or violent are not unique to this case. In a separate Tulsa incident, KFOR reported that a woman fatally shot her ex-boyfriend after she said he was breaking into her home. And in Detroit, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed by his ex-girlfriend’s brother while breaking into her apartment, according to ClickOnDetroit, which reported that police and neighbors said the man had been stalking his ex in an ongoing domestic-violence situation.
No further details have been released about the identities of those involved in the Tulsa case, and it remains unclear whether the first-degree burglary complaint has been formally filed since the suspect’s hospitalization.
