A former Wall Street vice president has traded spreadsheets for cannabis shelves, opening a boutique dispensary in Jersey City Heights that looks nothing like the clinical shops that dominate the industry. Elizabeth “Liz” Sarofiem, 31, is the sole owner of Candid, an adult-use cannabis dispensary she says she financed and built entirely on her own, without business partners or institutional investors.

According to NJ.com, Sarofiem is an Egyptian-American entrepreneur who spent more than six years at Morgan Stanley, rising to vice president, before shifting her focus to cannabis retail. She started working on Candid at age 26 and spent four years navigating licensing, financing, regulation and construction to get the shop open, the outlet reports. Candid describes itself on its own website as “Jersey City’s boutique dispensary on JFK Blvd,” located in the Jersey City Heights section of the city, according to candiddispensary.com.

Sarofiem told NJ.com that Candid was built to challenge stereotypes about cannabis users, industry participants and the dispensary experience itself, with the goal of making cannabis retail more accessible. She said the shop removes industry jargon and aims to create a welcoming environment for both experienced consumers and first-time shoppers, adding that seasoned smokers and dispensary newcomers alike should feel equally comfortable inside. The name itself, per the same NJ.com report, plays on a double meaning: candid, as in straightforward, and blunt, as in the cannabis product.

A Design That Skips the Clinical Look

Candid’s interior was created by Elpida NYC, a woman-owned design company, and features marble, warm wood, chrome, glass block and a statement tree, the report notes. That aesthetic is a deliberate departure from the darker or more clinical look common in many dispensaries. Candid’s own LinkedIn page echoes that positioning, describing itself as a “high-end boutique cannabis dispensary” whose “bold, design-driven space merges luxury aesthetics with authentic, approachable service,” according to Candid’s LinkedIn profile.

The shop carries New Jersey cannabis products including flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vapes and concentrates, and the dispensary’s own site adds topicals to that lineup as well. Candid’s tagline, “Bluntly Better,” shows up across both its LinkedIn presence and its website. The staff is entirely female, something Sarofiem said happened organically rather than by design, NJ.com reports.

Delivery, Testing and a Debated Discount

Candid says it offers same-day delivery within its service area for orders placed before 5 p.m., with standard delivery taking two to three hours, per its website. The company markets delivery across Jersey City neighborhoods including Downtown, Journal Square, The Heights and Bergen-Lafayette, along with nearby Hoboken, and says orders can be placed online for either in-store pickup or delivery. Candid’s site also states that every product sold is tested by an independent, state-licensed lab for potency and contaminants before it reaches shelves, and the company says it is licensed by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission — an agency that, per the state’s cannabis business site, issues licenses for medicinal and recreational cannabis operations statewide.

Candid’s website carries two different first-order discount claims: one page advertises 15% off a new customer’s first order, while another promotion elsewhere on the site offers 20% off a first order. The discrepancy appears directly on the dispensary’s own site, and it’s unclear which terms currently apply.

A Block Party Kickoff and a Crowded Local Market

Candid marked its arrival with a 21-and-older grand opening block party in Jersey City on Sept. 12, featuring food, live DJs, games, giveaways and local-business activations, according to NJ.com’s report. The celebration lands Candid in an increasingly crowded Jersey City cannabis scene. RIPT Dispensary, at 220 Broadway, was the first to open in the city and sells medicinal products only, while Downtown Flwr, at 141 Newark Avenue, became the second, initially selling medical cannabis before planning an Oct. 6 grand opening tied to the start of recreational sales, according to Hoboken Girl.

Downtown Flwr owner Amanda Hardy has been working toward a New Jersey cannabis license since 2018, successfully securing a Jersey City medical license in 2019 before pursuing adult-use expansion, the outlet reports. Jersey City has drawn enough dispensary interest that the city imposed a six-month moratorium on new applicants just to work through its backlog, with many planned shops clustered in The Heights and additional locations slated for downtown. Against that backdrop, Candid is betting that a warmer, design-forward space — and a founder with a Wall Street resume — can help it stand out on JFK Boulevard.
