A federal indictment charges Kristopher Lunsford, a Georgia resident arrested in Nevada, with six counts of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering tied to a $105 million semi-truck investment scheme that prosecutors say scammed more than 500 people nationwide, including Tampa-area residents.
FOX 13 Tampa Bay described a “fake truck empire scam” as busted, per FOX 13 Tampa Bay.
Forensic Accounting Reveals a Classic Ponzi Structure
Federal forensic accounting found that of the more than $105 million raised, roughly $75 million was funneled back out to pay returns to earlier investors — the hallmark of a Ponzi arrangement — while only about $2 million went toward actual business operations, the justice department's release states. The remaining funds, over $25 million, were allegedly spent on personal luxuries including real estate, sports cars, jewelry, private charters, resorts, casinos, and nightclubs.
If convicted on all federal counts, Lunsford faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each wire fraud charge and up to 10 years for each money laundering charge.
Lunsford and Two Companies
The case names Lunsford, AKL Transport LLC, and Southern Truck Leasing LLC.
Tampa Prosecutors Widen Their White-Collar Crackdown
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida oversees federal crimes across 35 Florida counties representing more than 11.5 million residents.
The Lunsford case also lands amid a broader surge in freight-industry fraud. Logistics and double-brokering scams have generated an estimated $500 million to $700 million in annual industry losses across North American supply chains, Hoodline previously reported.
