Medic responded to the scene and confirmed the person was deceased when crews arrived.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reported the closure shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday, and the department's Major Crash Investigations Unit was investigating the crash, according to WSOC-TV. A Stretch of Road With a Grim History
A similar fatal crash occurred in October 2024, when two people were killed after a speeding, impaired driver crashed into their vehicle as it turned, according to the City of Charlotte. The block has also drawn major emergency response before for other reasons — in February 2026, a fatal shooting near a Food Lion at the same intersection of The Plaza and East W.T. Harris Boulevard brought a heavy police presence, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
East W.T. Harris Boulevard is designated as part of Charlotte's Vision Zero High Injury Network, a small portion of city streets — just 13% — that account for 80% of all fatal and severe-injury crashes citywide, Hoodline has previously reported. The corridor has proven especially deadly in recent months: in August 2026, a 35-year-old woman died after her vehicle was severed in a crash on W.T. Harris Boulevard, a case that led to felony death by vehicle charges against an impaired driver, according to CMPD. That crash killed Briana Watkins, and Hoodline reported the driver faced an upgraded charge in the case. Earlier in the year, a wrong-way collision on East W.T. Harris Boulevard killed Yaneth Guevara, a case that ended in a guilty plea, and in May a fatal crash in the 9400 block of the same road snarled the morning commute.
A Citywide Pattern of Rising Fatalities
Charlotte's fiscal year 2025 Vision Zero annual report found that traffic fatalities rose 9% in 2025 to 81 deaths, even as total citywide collisions dropped nearly 31% from 2022 levels, per The Charlotte Ledger. Unsafe driving behavior contributed to more than 60% of crashes involving serious injuries or fatalities, according to Dewey Ramsay & Hunt.
City leaders have begun responding to the trend. In July, Charlotte approved a one-year pilot program to install red-light cameras at 10 high-risk intersections after 34 traffic fatalities were recorded citywide during just the first half of 2026, according to SignalNews Denver.
