A mobile wood-fired pizza operation known for pies with heavy metal-inspired names is trying to plant permanent roots in San Marcos, filing paperwork with county health officials for a storefront at 823 W. San Marcos Blvd. Fireball Pizzeria owner Loren Tipton has not set an opening date, but the business says it is in the final stages of development while it awaits sign-off from health regulators.
Tipton confirmed the plans to WhatNow San Diego, telling the outlet there isn't yet a firm timeline for opening the doors. The move would mark Fireball Pizzeria's first true brick-and-mortar location after years of building a following as a mobile pop-up, making appearances at Oceanside Ale Works and at JS Garage. The business has leaned on its wood-fired oven and scratch-made menu, including pies like the War Pig, Metal Storm Face the Pesto, and the Fireball cheese pizza, to build a name for itself around North County.
A Second Attempt at Going Permanent
This isn't Tipton's first swing at a physical location. Back in 2022, Fireball Pizzeria worked toward opening a restaurant and bar on Wisconsin Avenue in Oceanside, at the site of surf retail shop JS Garage, a plan that ultimately did not pan out — JS Garage remains open and operating as a retail store at that address, according to reporting from WhatNow San Diego. The San Marcos project represents a pivot toward a new corner of North County after that earlier effort stalled.
The pizzeria has kept its community ties alive in the meantime. As recently as this month, Fireball Pizzeria served as a featured food vendor supplying wood-fired pizza during the Stab Magazine Surf100 Challenge Series Finale at JS Garage in Oceanside, according to Stab Magazine. The event underscores how JS Garage has functioned as a recurring pop-up partner even as the brand pursues its first standalone restaurant elsewhere.
Pizza Union's Recent Run at the Address
The San Marcos address Fireball Pizzeria has its eye on comes with some culinary history built in. The unit most recently housed Pizza Union, an independent New York-style pizzeria serving pizzas, calzones, and strombolis before it closed this year, according to the restaurant's own ordering site, orderpizzaunion.com.

Fireball Pizzeria's timing puts it in the middle of a broader remake of West San Marcos Boulevard. Down the street, the city has greenlit an overhaul of the historic Old California Restaurant Row site at 1020 W. San Marcos Blvd, converting what was once North County's central dining destination into a mixed-use development with 202 housing units, more than 10,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 1.5-acre public park, according to The Coast News.
