Food Basket International has opened at 683 Belmont St., in the former Brockton Stop & Shop. The store began with a soft opening a few weeks ago, The Enterprise reported; MassLive also reported on the new market.
The Brockton opening comes amid other changes to former Stop & Shop spaces. In 2024, the company announced closures at underperforming stores and said it had reviewed its store portfolio to support future growth, The Herald News reported. In Edison, New Jersey, Go-Pal Supermarkets is slated to occupy a former Stop & Shop space with a grocery concept combining American and Indian offerings, including meat, seafood, bakery and deli departments, according to NJBIZ.
At the Brockton store, shoppers can find fresh produce and carry-out Haitian, Cape Verdean, Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, according to The Enterprise. Food Basket International's website lists halal beef, lamb, goat and poultry, along with live fish and imported frozen seafood.
Co-owner Alauddin Chowdhury told The Enterprise that the store is intended to bring Brockton residents together and provide halal groceries and familiar foods for Muslim families and other customers. He also said some local shoppers previously drove to the company's Lowell location for particular fish and spices; the account of his remarks was also reported by MassLive.
The official grand-opening event is scheduled for Friday, October 2, at 11 a.m., according to a business Facebook post cited by The Enterprise and reported by MassLive.
