A 34-year-old Springfield man has died after being shot inside an apartment on Forest Park Avenue early Sunday morning, according to Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni. Juan Dominguez was rushed to Baystate Medical Center after officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound, but he did not survive.
Springfield police officers responded to the 0-100 block of Forest Park Avenue at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, where they located an adult male gunshot victim, according to a statement from Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni. Officers on scene provided first aid before transporting Dominguez to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died. Gulluni identified Dominguez, a Springfield resident, as the victim and offered his sympathies to the man's family.
The Springfield Police Homicide Unit is now conducting an ongoing investigation into the killing, working jointly with the Hampden District Attorney's Murder Unit, per the same statement. Captain Trent Duda is directing the homicide unit's side of the inquiry. No arrests or charges have been announced, and details on a possible motive or the weapon used have not been released.
A Residential Corner of Forest Park
The stretch of Forest Park Avenue where the shooting happened sits in a neighborhood that is largely residential, made up of historic pre-1940 housing stock, single-family homes, and small multi-family apartment buildings, according to NeighborhoodScout. Forest Park itself, a 735-acre public green space bordering East Longmeadow, gives the surrounding area its name and character. The violence unfolded not on the street but inside an apartment, according to the DA's account, adding a layer of unease for neighbors used to a quieter residential stretch.
Dominguez was taken to Baystate Medical Center, the only Level I Trauma Center in Western Massachusetts and the region's primary facility for critically injured patients, per background from Fitch Ratings, which affirmed the hospital's A+ issuer default rating in February and noted it holds an estimated 65% inpatient market share in west-central Massachusetts. The hospital also runs the region's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and serves as a major regional referral center for the area's most serious trauma cases.
Second Fatal Predawn Shooting in Ten Days
Dominguez's death marks the second predawn fatal shooting in Springfield within about ten days. Hoodline previously reported that Gulluni identified 19-year-old Reinalyz Caraballo as the victim of a separate shooting who also died after being taken to Baystate Medical Center, in a case that similarly fell under Captain Trent Duda's homicide unit. That earlier case also relied on Springfield's ShotSpotter acoustic detection technology, which has been active in the city since at least 2008 and automatically dispatches officers to gunfire even when no 911 calls come in, since historical data shows most acoustic detections in Springfield never generate a phone call to police.
Despite these back-to-back cases, city data suggests homicides in Springfield have actually been trending downward. The Springfield Police Department's own reporting shows homicides were nearly cut in half in 2024 compared to 2023, part of an overall 1% drop in primary crime categories tracked citywide, according to the City of Springfield. Officers responded to more than 223,000 calls for service and made 3,151 arrests over the course of that year. Longer-term figures compiled by MassLive show the city has averaged 17 homicides annually over a 24-year tracking period through 2025, with pandemic-era spikes gradually receding toward that historical baseline.

If a suspect is eventually identified, charged, and convicted of first-degree murder, Massachusetts law mandates a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 265, Section 1. First-degree murder under that statute covers killings committed with deliberate premeditation, extreme atrocity or cruelty, or during commission of a life felony.
For now, investigators are asking the public for help.
