Four masked burglars smashed through the glass front door of a Witherspoon Street boutique before dawn on Sept. 1, cleared out an entire wall of designer handbags, and were gone within a minute — leaving behind an estimated $250,000 loss and a Princeton business barely two months old scrambling to recover.
The victim has been identified as Princeton Bag Archive, a specialized designer resale shop at 38 Witherspoon Street that had only opened in late June, according to The Daily Princetonian. Princeton Police were dispatched at 1:50 a.m. for a commercial burglar alarm, and officers reportedly arrived at the scene before the shop's owner even checked security footage, according to 94.5 PST. A security camera alert woke the owner shortly after the break-in, per the same station's report.
Surveillance footage shared by the store showed at least four masked intruders moving with clear intent, according to New Jersey 101.5. The group targeted an entire wall of high-tier inventory, making off with Hermès Birkin bags, Hermès Kelly bags, and rare Chanel handbags — 75 in total. The thieves rummaged through the store before fleeing within roughly a minute of entering, per 94.5 PST's account. As of the most recent reporting, none of the stolen handbags had been recovered and no suspects had been identified.
Investigators Widen the Net
Princeton Police Department Captain Thomas Lagomarsino confirmed that local detectives are actively coordinating with several other law enforcement agencies to track down and identify the suspects, the Princetonian reports. No arrests have been made, and Princeton Police say the investigation is continuing.
The scale of the response reflects how unusual the crime is for a town more accustomed to quiet campus streets than coordinated commercial heists. Following the break-in, Princeton Bag Archive announced on social media that it would remain closed for one to two weeks while it repairs its shattered glass storefront and overhauls its security systems, according to the Princetonian's reporting.
Part of a Wider Pattern Across New Jersey
The Princeton break-in echoes a similar smash-and-grab in Morristown two months earlier, when five masked suspects hit the boutique C'est La Bella in July and stole roughly $40,000 in vintage Chanel, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton bags in a daytime raid that lasted about 10 seconds, according to News 12 New Jersey. New Jersey 101.5 notes that handbag shops in the state have increasingly been targeted by organized retail theft, including a Roxbury handbag boutique that was burglarized four times within four months in 2024.
Princeton itself had already seen a smaller-scale version of this trend. In January, Princeton Police responded to a report on Province Line Road in which thieves broke into a parked vehicle and made off with designer handbags, credit cards, and luxury outerwear worth thousands of dollars, according to Patch.
What Suspects Could Face If Caught
Under New Jersey law, the value of the stolen merchandise carries serious legal weight. Theft of property valued at $75,000 or more is graded as a second-degree indictable offense under N.J.S.A. 2C:20-2, according to Roberts & Teeter LLC, carrying penalties of five to 10 years in state prison and fines up to $150,000. Commercial burglary itself is separately classified as a third-degree crime under N.J.S.A. 2C:18-2, punishable by three to five years in prison, though charges can escalate to the second degree if a perpetrator carries a weapon or threatens injury, per Villani & DeLuca P.C.
For now, the case remains open on multiple fronts. Whether investigators can link the Princeton crew to the earlier Morristown theft or other regional resale burglaries is still unclear, and no suspects have been named in connection with any of the incidents.
