A Framingham man is facing an animal cruelty charge after witnesses say his dog was dragged alongside his moving truck for approximately 10 minutes before a bystander forced him to stop. Police say the pit bull mix, later identified as Laika, suffered road rash across her body and needed stitches in one paw following the ordeal.
Framingham Police received a report around 3:20 p.m. about a dog being held by a leash outside the driver's-side window of a moving vehicle, according to NBC Boston. Officers later found 23-year-old Christian Ventura in the area of 55 Second Street and took him into custody. Court statements reported by Patch detailed that a witness forced Ventura's truck to stop by pulling a vehicle in front of it. After the truck stopped, Ventura allegedly picked up the bleeding dog, threw her back into the truck, and drove home while witnesses followed him.
Neighbor Describes Being Horrified
Tracey Bryant, a local resident, said the incident horrified her, according to NBC Boston's reporting. Local reporting by 7News Boston, relayed by Patch, identified the injured dog as Laika, a pit bull mix who received stitches in one paw and suffered road rash across her body. She was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment following the incident.
Framingham Animal Control is now caring for Laika. The municipal agency has previously described its work on inter-agency emergency animal handling and safety training for municipal officers, firefighters, and EMTs across Massachusetts, per a statement the agency published on Facebook. It is unclear from available reporting whether Laika required treatment beyond the veterinary hospital where she was initially taken.
Charges and Court Appearance
Ventura, identified by police as the driver involved in the incident, was charged with animal cruelty and appeared in Framingham District Court Monday morning. The station's report adds that Ventura was also charged with driving on a suspended license in addition to the animal cruelty count. Arraignment details were not immediately available, and attorney information for Ventura was also not immediately available, per NBC Boston.
Framingham District Court was the site of Ventura's appearance. The Hopkinton Independent reported that a 19-year-old was charged with animal cruelty and included the line, 'There is no defence to setting a cat on fire.'
What Ventura Could Face Under State Law
Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 272, Section 77, a first-offense conviction for felony animal cruelty carries maximum penalties of up to seven years in state prison, up to two and a half years in a house of correction, or fines up to $5,000, according to the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. That maximum sentence was raised from five years to seven years under Chapter 293 of the Acts of 2014, known as the PAWS Act.
The case remains active, with several details still unresolved. Ventura's arraignment plea and any bail conditions were not immediately available following his Monday court appearance, and it remains unclear whether his license suspension stemmed from a prior infraction. Laika's long-term recovery and future while in Framingham Animal Control's custody also remain to be seen as the case moves forward.
