A motorcyclist has died following a collision near Centerville Community Park in Fremont, where police say a driver turning left struck the rider as he traveled north on Hastings Street. The crash happened around 1:38 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Hastings and Keats streets, and the motorcyclist was later pronounced dead.
According to a preliminary police investigation described by the San Francisco Chronicle, the driver turned left at the intersection and collided with the motorcycle. Police said officers arriving at the scene found the motorcyclist unresponsive; he was taken to a hospital, where he died. His identity had not been released as of Wednesday evening.
Driver Stayed at the Scene, Police Say
The driver involved in the crash was not injured and remained on site, cooperating with investigators, per the same report. The Fremont Police Department’s investigation into the collision was still active as of Wednesday evening, and no further details about what led up to the crash had been made public.
The case adds to a string of fatal traffic collisions the department has logged this year. A separate crash in January, at Cushing Parkway and Northport Loop, was described by KRON4 as Fremont’s second deadly traffic collision of that year. In that incident, a motorcyclist struck by a pickup truck was taken to a local hospital and died about an hour later, while the pickup driver was uninjured and stayed to work with investigators. The victim in that January crash was later identified by the coroner’s office as 49-year-old Andrew Barret Mackenzie of San Jose, KRON4 reported — a separate case from Wednesday’s crash on Hastings Street.
Investigation Continues
No additional information about Wednesday’s collision, including the motorcyclist’s identity or the cause of the crash beyond the preliminary account, had been released. Fremont police have not said whether any citations are expected as the investigation continues.
