The advisory applies to water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and other consumption-related purposes. The report said it was expected to remain in effect through at least Tuesday, but officials had not provided a firm restoration or lifting time.
Schools Closed As Crews Chase Down the Problem
Jones County Schools closed Monday because of the water-system disruption, according to the report. Municipal crews were working to locate the problem and make repairs, while the cause and the full scope of the service interruption had not been publicly identified.
What the advisory means for residents
According to Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidance, water covered by a boil notice should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil. The Georgia Department of Public Health explains that a boil water advisory means contaminants are possible, while a boil water notice means contamination has been confirmed. Residents should continue following the advisory for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and other consumption-related uses until officials lift it. The City of Gray Water Department says it provides water and sewer service to city residents and, to a limited extent, areas of unincorporated Jones County. The department reports a customer base of more than 3,300.
Officials have not indicated how many households, businesses, or facilities have been affected by the outage, and no firm timeline has been given for full restoration or for when the boil water advisory could be lifted beyond the expectation that it remains active through at least Tuesday.
Fire Crews Reposition to Protect Vulnerable Residents
The Gray Fire Department also staged fire apparatus at nursing homes and other designated locations, according to the report, as a precaution while water service remained disrupted.
City officials urged residents to limit non-essential water use while repairs continued. Residents with questions about service or the advisory were directed to the City of Gray Water Department.
