A westbound METRO Green Line train struck and fatally injured a person near University and Prior avenues in St. Paul on Friday night. Police were called shortly after 8:30 p.m., and the person died despite life-saving efforts; no other injuries were reported, according to FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul.
The Pioneer Press reported that Metro Transit police are investigating how the person got onto the tracks. The person's identity had not been released as of Saturday morning, FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul reported.
Service Disruption Along University Avenue
Green Line service was interrupted near the scene, with buses temporarily replacing trains between the Snelling Avenue and Raymond Avenue stations while investigators and crews worked in the area, according to FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Authorities had not publicly explained how the person reached the tracks near University and Prior avenues, and Metro Transit police had not released the person's identity a day after the incident.
Safety Measures Along the Green Line
According to Metro Transit, all light-rail stations and vehicles are equipped with emergency call buttons. The agency instructs pedestrians to cross tracks only at designated crossings. A Safe and Strong University Avenue initiative also brings a more visible presence from Metro Transit officers, St. Paul police and county deputies along University Avenue and the Green Line, alongside service providers, FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul reported.
