Gunfire tore through Sunny Brook Apartments in Elberton, Georgia, during a music video recording, sending a bullet through the exterior wall of an occupied unit and lodging it inside an interior wall. Two groups reportedly opened fire at each other while a crowd of onlookers watched the shoot unfold, and no injuries have yet been confirmed by authorities.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, 911 calls reporting the gunfire brought Elbert County Sheriff's Office deputies and Elberton Police Department officers to the 130-unit complex, where officers collected bullet casings and video evidence from the scene. Sunny Brook Apartments sits at 1300 Mineral Springs Road and was acquired in late 2022 by Infinity RE Impact as part of a 13-property regional affordable housing portfolio financed through an $87.7 million Berkadia loan, according to Atlanta Agent Magazine.
Investigators have not named any suspects or released descriptions of those involved, and authorities have not confirmed whether anyone was hurt in the shooting, the station's report notes. Elbert County Sheriff's Office, in an official statement, said its detectives are working alongside a Georgia Bureau of Investigation gang investigator and witnesses as they try to identify the shooters, per the same account.
A Small Town With a Recent History of Gang-Linked Gunfire
The shooting adds to a troubling pattern in Elberton, a rural community of roughly 4,650 residents that serves as the seat of Elbert County near the South Carolina border, according to Georgia Official Records. In October 2024, a homecoming afterparty shooting on Evergreen Drive killed 15-year-old Bryshun Jordan and injured seven others, resulting in at least nine arrests on murder and gang charges, as reported by 105.3 WSGC Radio.
More recently, in December 2025, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Elbert County Sheriff's Office with a series of fatal shooting incidents in the county that left two people dead, according to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation press release. That pattern of state intervention reflects how heavily a small municipality like Elberton depends on GBI resources when violent crime strains local law enforcement capacity.
What Charges Could Follow if Gang Ties Are Confirmed
Georgia law gives investigators a wide menu of potential charges depending on what they find. Georgia Code § 16-5-21 covers aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and specifically addresses firing a firearm from a vehicle toward an occupied building; aggravated assault is a felony carrying a sentence of 1 to 20 years in prison, according to Justia Law. Separately, firing weapons toward or around a crowd of spectators can be charged as reckless conduct under O.C.G.A. § 16-5-60, a misdemeanor carrying up to a $1,000 fine and 12 months in prison per count.
If investigators substantiate that the exchange of gunfire was gang-related, suspects could also face charges under the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, O.C.G.A. § 16-15-4, which makes participating in criminal gang activity a standalone felony punishable by 5 to 20 years in prison.
