A dark-colored car rolled up to the 600 block of South Independence Boulevard in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood at about 7:11 a.m. Saturday, and two people got out and opened fire on three people standing outside, wounding all of them before speeding off. A 25-year-old man was shot in the body and is in critical condition, while a 30-year-old man was shot multiple times and a 28-year-old woman was also struck in the body, both listed in serious condition.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the 30-year-old man and 25-year-old man were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, while the 28-year-old woman was transported to Stroger Hospital. Police said the suspects drove off to an unknown location, and as of Sunday morning no arrests had been made. The outlet reported that no other information was immediately available.
Mount Sinai Hospital sits less than two miles from the shooting scene and runs a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center that handles roughly 2,000 Level 1 trauma cases and as many as 65,000 emergency department visits a year, according to Rush University Medical Center. Stroger Hospital, where the wounded woman was taken, treats more than 6,000 trauma patients annually at its own Level 1 center, where firearm injuries make up roughly 30 percent of admitted trauma cases compared to a national average of 4.2 percent, per Advisory Board — a caseload so heavy the hospital has partnered with the U.S. Navy to train military medics.
A Block With a Violent Recent Past
Saturday's shooting is not the first time gunfire has torn through this particular stretch of Independence Boulevard. On December 20, 2020, three women sitting in a parked car on the same 600 block were shot, and a 20-year-old victim died four days later from a gunshot wound to the head, a death the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled a homicide following an autopsy, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
In December 2023, Chicago Police arrested 20-year-old Trevon Redmond on the same block in connection with a May 2023 shooting in neighboring Homan Square that left a man critically injured, and he was charged with felony attempted murder, the station reported. The block falls under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Police Department's 11th (Harrison) District and Area 4 Detective Division, which handles felony violent crime investigations across West Side neighborhoods from its headquarters at 3151 West Harrison Street.
Boulevard Corridor Sees Repeated Gunfire
Independence Boulevard is part of Chicago's historic park-and-boulevard system, forming a residential corridor lined with greystone homes and multi-family buildings that connects Garfield Park to the north with Douglass Park to the south, according to the Chicago Public Library. Despite that historic pedigree, the corridor has kept turning up in gun violence reports. Just last month, a 17-year-old boy was shot on the 1300 block of the same boulevard and drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, as Hoodline previously reported.
Saturday's shooting also lands amid a mixed citywide picture on gun violence. Chicago recorded 416 homicides in 2025, a 29 percent single-year decline that brought the total to its lowest point since 1965, but Council on Criminal Justice data cited by Hoodline showed gun assaults rose 1 percent and homicides climbed 3 percent citywide during the first half of 2026. West Side districts had shown real progress the year before — the neighboring 10th District recorded a 50 percent drop in homicides, from 52 in 2024 to 26 in 2025, according to Austin Weekly News.
No suspect descriptions or vehicle information have been released, and it remains unclear whether investigators have identified a motive or a specific target among the three victims. Area 4 detectives are continuing to investigate.
