An inmate was found with apparent stab wounds on a housing tier at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown, and emergency medical services personnel declared him dead at the scene. The man has not yet been publicly identified. Maryland State Police say the investigation into his death is active and ongoing.
According to CBS Baltimore, homicide investigators were called around 10 p.m. on Monday, and the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the correctional facility. Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division were sent to process the scene for evidence. State public safety investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit first alerted state police homicide detectives at approximately 10 p.m. Monday, after the victim was found on the tier of his housing unit, per WCBC.
The killing marked the first reported inmate homicide in a Maryland state prison since May, ending a four-month pause following a surge of fatalities earlier in the year, according to a report from The Baltimore Banner. That lull follows one of the sharpest escalations in prison violence the state has seen in recent memory.
A Facility With a Troubled Recent History
Monday's stabbing was not the first fatal incident at MCTC. In May 2019, 56-year-old inmate Ronnie Harris died of blunt force trauma in an assault that led to a grand jury homicide indictment against a fellow prisoner, according to a report from AP News at the time.
MCTC sits within a larger prison complex along Roxbury Road in Hagerstown that has drawn intense scrutiny over the past year. In July, 19 correctional officers and eight medical personnel were administratively charged in connection with the May 2026 death of inmate Colin Wolf at the adjacent Roxbury Correctional Institution, part of the same complex, the report states.
Statewide Homicide Numbers Have Quadrupled
The broader numbers explain why a single stabbing carries such weight in Maryland's correctional system. Data gathered by the outlet's investigative reporters showed that annual homicides in Maryland state-run prisons quadrupled between 2023 and 2025, rising from three to 14 and pushing the state's 2025 prison homicide rate to nearly four times the national average. Between 2023 and mid-2026, 33 incarcerated people were killed in Maryland state-run correctional facilities, a total higher than all neighboring states combined, per the same investigation.
Union representatives for Maryland correctional officers have attributed fatal prison violence to severe staffing shortages that leave tiers unsupervised.
Body Cameras Already in Place at MCTC
Maryland State Police have released no further details about a suspect or the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter on the housing tier.
