Tampa Fire Rescue was on scene at Port Tampa Bay for a hazardous materials incident, and as a precaution, officials issued a shelter-in-place notification for residents of Harbour Island. Fire and hazmat personnel were on scene working to mitigate the situation, with the department saying updates would follow.
The department shared the news in a post on X, writing that “Tampa Fire Rescue is on scene of a hazmat incident located @PortTampaBay. Fire & HazMat personnel are on scene, mitigating the incident,” before adding, “As an abundance of caution, a shelter in place notification has been issued for residents of Harbor Island,” according to Tampa Fire Rescue
No details were immediately available about the hazmat incident or which facility within the port complex was affected.
The shelter-in-place order makes sense given the geography involved. Harbour Island is a residential island community sitting across Garrison Channel and the Ybor Turning Basin, according to the City of Tampa.
A Port Built for Heavy Industry
Port Tampa Bay is no small operation. It's Florida's largest and most diverse port, moving more than 33 million tons of cargo annually, per Port Tampa Bay. That scale comes with serious chemical volume — the port handles anhydrous ammonia, liquid sulfur, and sulfuric acid. Anhydrous ammonia in particular is imported largely for fertilizer manufacturing and industrial refrigeration.
In this incident, a shelter-in-place notification was issued.
Crews Respond to Hazmat Calls
Tampa Fire Rescue responds to hazardous-material calls with fire and HazMat personnel. The department said those personnel were on scene at the port incident, working to mitigate it.
This isn't the department's first port-area chemical response this year, either. In April, Tampa Fire Rescue deployed a multi-unit hazmat team that shut down an ammonia leak in Tampa without any reported injuries.
What Harbour Island Residents Should Do Now
During ammonia incidents, people are advised to shelter in place and shut ventilation systems. Officials also advise residents to avoid the area and not approach or breathe any haze. It remains unclear when the shelter-in-place order for Harbour Island will be lifted, and Tampa Fire Rescue has indicated only that further updates will follow as crews continue working to mitigate the incident at the port.
