A man was seriously injured and trapped in his car Thursday after a head-on crash on Plympton Road in Plymouth, and he had to be extracted before being flown by helicopter to a trauma center in Boston. A female youth driving the other vehicle, an SUV, suffered only minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
The crash was reported at about 11:50 a.m. near Carver Road and the West Plymouth Square shopping plaza, according to NBC Boston. The collision left the man's car in the median while the SUV suffered front-end damage, the station reported. Once freed from the wreckage, the driver was rushed by ambulance to Plymouth Municipal Airport and then flown to Boston by helicopter, per the same account.
Road Closed as Crews Cleared the Scene
Plympton Road was shut down during the emergency response so first responders could clear the crash site, though it has since reopened, the station's report notes. MassLive reported that police and firefighters responded to the crash near Route 80 and Carver Road around 11:50 a.m., and that firefighters had to use extrication tools to free the man trapped inside his sedan.
The SUV driver, identified by NBC Boston as 17 years old, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her minor injuries, according to MassLive's report. The Plymouth Police Department is investigating the crash, and criminal charges were pending from both Kingston police and Plymouth police, NBC Boston reported.
Kingston Police Describe a Pursuit Tied to the Crash
Kingston police said separately that they had pursued a vehicle connected to the crash following a wellbeing check in their town, but that officers stopped the pursuit before the vehicle left Kingston, per the NBC Boston account. No further details on that pursuit or the vehicle involved have been released.
