A 49-year-old man died inside Henderson Detention Center on Tuesday, just one day after he was booked on a failure-to-appear warrant tied to a 2025 misdemeanor petit larceny charge. Corrections officers found him unresponsive during a routine inmate check, and staff began life-saving measures before he was pronounced dead.

The man had been taken into custody Monday and remained held at the facility since then, according to the Las Vegas Sun. “The 49-year-old man was found to be unresponsive by corrections officers during routine inmate checks Tuesday,” the outlet reported, adding that despite lifesaving measures, he died. The Henderson Police Department, which operates the detention center, said staff moved immediately to try to save him once he was discovered.

The Clark County coroner's office is expected to release the man's identity along with the cause and manner of his death. As of the Las Vegas Sun's report, this was the only death recorded at the detention center so far in 2026.

A Facility With a Troubled Recent History

Tuesday's death adds to a string of in-custody incidents at the Henderson jail over the past two years. In December 2024, 36-year-old Jaime Chrusch died six days after being arrested and booked into the facility on suspicion of domestic violence, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Clark County coroner's office ruled Chrusch's death a suicide, and a lawsuit now alleges the city of Henderson failed to properly train, supervise, monitor and direct detention personnel around issues including detainee self-harm, ligature hazards and telephone equipment.

Another case involved 53-year-old Ronald Winborne, who died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center six days after being shot with a Taser and arrested by Henderson police, per News 3 Las Vegas. Winborne was arrested on March 21 and booked into the detention center the next day, where documents show he was held in the medical housing unit because of a broken collarbone. The Clark County coroner's office later ruled his death a homicide because of the use of force during his arrest, according to Henderson police cited by the Review-Journal.

What Comes Next

No cause or manner of death has been released for the man who died Tuesday, and officials have not yet identified him publicly. As with the earlier cases, that determination falls to the Clark County coroner's office, which is expected to issue findings in the coming days.
