A 30-year-old Hesperia man is now behind bars, accused of obtaining explicit images from a 15-year-old minor and then allegedly using those images to extort the minor further. Enrique Alvarez was arrested Monday in the 16000 block of Live Oak Street in Hesperia and booked into the High Desert Detention Center in connection with the case.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff
Detectives say Alvarez is accused of possessing child sexual abuse material involving a 15-year-old minor. Investigators are reviewing evidence tied to the case.
Alvarez was booked in connection with a suspected violation of Penal Code 311.11(b), which covers possession of child sexual abuse material by someone with a prior qualifying sex offense conviction. For someone with such a prior conviction, the charge carries an elevated felony sentencing range of two, four, or six years in state prison, according to FindLaw. For someone without a prior sex-offense record, subdivision (a) can carry state-prison imprisonment, county jail for up to one year, a fine, or a combination.
What the Charges Mean Under State Law
Penal Code 288.3(a), enacted under California's Proposition 83, known as Jessica's Law, allows prosecutors to charge someone who contacts a minor online with intent to commit a felony sex crime even before any physical contact occurs. The potential sentence depends on the underlying offense; one example carries a potential sentence of up to 14 years in prison, per Cron Israels & Stark.
Held Without Bail at High Desert Detention
At High Desert Detention Alvarez is being held at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, a Type II correctional facility operated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department with a capacity exceeding 2,100 inmates. The investigation is being handled by the department's Crimes Against Children Detail, within the Specialized Investigations Division.
A Pattern of Recent Arrests in Hesperia
Earlier that month, on September 3, the unit arrested 29-year-old Hesperia resident Cameron David Nelson, accused of posing as a 17-year-old online to obtain explicit images from a 15-year-old girl in Minnesota, as Hoodline previously reported. Nelson was booked on similar charges with bail set at $100,000.
The case also fits into a much larger national surge in online enticement reporting. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received more than 50,000 reports of financially motivated sextortion targeting youth in 2025, averaging 137 reports per day nationwide, according to MissingKids.org.
