A shooting between two vehicles on MO 291 Highway at Chipman Road in Lee's Summit sent one person to the hospital with gunshot wounds and left a second person injured by flying glass shrapnel Wednesday morning. Police responded just before 11 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the southbound lanes, where three suspects were seen shooting into another vehicle stopped at the intersection.
The attack forced officers to shut down the southbound lanes of MO 291 at Chipman Road as detectives worked the scene, according to Cedar News. The Kansas City Star reports that all three suspects wore dark clothing and that police were still searching for them as of Wednesday afternoon. Officer Kelly Johnson, a spokesperson with the Lee's Summit Police Department, is among those handling public information on the case.
Investigators identified the suspect vehicle — a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck bearing a California vanity license plate — through a combination of witness interviews and the city's Flock Safety camera network, per the same account. The truck was last seen leaving the shooting scene and making a U-turn onto northbound MO 291. Lee's Summit maintains 55 Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras across the city, a system detailed on the police department's public Transparency Hub, giving officers a wide net for tracking vehicles tied to crimes in progress.
A Corridor With a History of Gunfire
Wednesday's shooting is not the first outbreak of violence along the Chipman Road corridor. In May 2023, Lee's Summit police responded to a parking lot shooting at Lea McKeighan Park on the 100 block of NE Chipman Road that left three people injured by gunfire, according to KMBC 9 News. The area sits along a highway corridor that has also seen a string of vehicle pursuits in recent weeks.
In August, a shooting suspect from Odessa led law enforcement on a high-speed chase that ended in Lee's Summit after a crash and foot pursuit, an incident Hoodline previously reported was set in motion after a Flock camera tracked the suspect's vehicle. That same month, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers pursued a vehicle linked to local break-ins at speeds exceeding 100 mph starting at the MO 291 and U.S. 50 interchange before two suspects were caught on foot in Raytown.
Suspects Still at Large as Search Continues
The Lee's Summit Police Department can also draw on the Police-Involved Incident Team, a multi-jurisdictional task force that pools detectives from Lee's Summit, Independence, Grandview, and Blue Springs for major violent crime investigations. It remains unclear whether that task force has been activated for Wednesday's shooting, and police have not released a motive or said whether the people involved knew each other.

The shooting also unfolds against a backdrop of mixed crime trends across the metro. Major Cities Chiefs Association data showed overall homicides and violent crime across the Kansas City metropolitan area declined during the first half of 2026, reaching a four-year low, even as suburban highway corridors like MO 291 continue to see sporadic gunfire and high-speed police chases. Lee's Summit, the sixth-most populous city in Missouri with an estimated population above 108,000, spans roughly 66 square miles across Jackson and Cass counties and has become one of the region's busiest suburban highway hubs.
Traffic along the corridor has already been in flux this summer, with the Missouri Department of Transportation running interchange and bridge replacement work at MO 291 North and U.S. 50 through November, causing periodic lane and ramp closures near the shooting site.
