Atlanta is starting Sunday near 73 degrees, but the thermometer will climb quickly toward 93 under mostly sunny skies. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through the evening, with afternoon storms adding a second hazard to the Labor Day weekend forecast.
Heat Advisory Runs Through Sunday Evening
The National Weather Service says heat index values could reach 105 degrees across the Atlanta area, with the worst combination of heat and humidity arriving during the afternoon. Residents should drink plenty of water, take breaks in air conditioning or shade, and keep children, older adults, outdoor workers and pets out of dangerous heat whenever possible, according to the National Weather Service.
Storms Could Turn Severe After 2 P.M.
Showers and thunderstorms may develop between 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday, with storm chances continuing into the evening. Forecasters warn that some storms could bring damaging wind gusts, quarter-size hail, frequent lightning, heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding in urban or poorly drained areas.
The storm threat is a sharper update to the heat-and-rain pattern outlined in Hoodline’s earlier forecast, which noted that cooler holiday weather was on the way but did not carry today’s same level of severe-weather concern.
Labor Day Brings Cooler, Breezier Weather
Monday should feel noticeably cooler, with patchy fog before 8 a.m., a high near 86 and a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. East winds will run 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, before Tuesday turns mostly sunny near 88.
Temperatures then rebound into the upper 80s and low 90s later in the week. Thursday through Saturday brings another round of afternoon shower and thunderstorm chances, so the forecast may continue to favor flexible plans for outdoor events.
