Patio Restaurant & Lounge, the soul food restaurant and R&B lounge on East Valley View Parkway in Independence, Missouri, has permanently closed after a year and a half in business. The venue cited financial issues as the reason for shutting down, announcing the news on social media.
The closure comes roughly sixteen months after gunfire erupted outside the lounge during its Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5, 2025, an incident that left a security guard shot in the leg. As reported by the Kansas City Star, the restaurant opened in February 2025 and offered dishes like Cajun fried shrimp, wings, lamb chops and cocktails, along with DJ nights, Chiefs watch parties and birthday celebrations. In its closure announcement, the business thanked customers for their memories, relationships, celebrations, laughs and support, according to the same report. The Kansas City Star said it contacted Patio's ownership for comment on the closure but did not receive a response.
A Violent Night That Shadowed the Business
According to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, police recovered at least 75 shell casings outside the lounge after the shooting, and the prosecutor's office described the firearm as a stolen handgun with a metal bar affixed to it and a modified firing mechanism. Court documents cited by the prosecutor's office show the violence began after security guards escorted a patron out following an indoor brawl; the suspect then retrieved a weapon from a vehicle, opened fire on staff, and shot a security guard in the leg before guards disarmed and detained him at a neighboring business.
The shooter, identified as Mekai G. Kelly-James, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He entered his plea at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence before Circuit Judge Cory Atkins, who sentenced him to concurrent seven-year prison terms this year, per the prosecutor's office. The criminal investigation involved the establishment.
A Corridor Already Under Pressure
The standalone building at 19700 E. Valley View Parkway spans 6,269 square feet on a 1.65-acre site and was built in 1999, with a commercial lease structure set for an initial seven-year term starting in 2023, according to a LoopNet listing. Property listings associate the address with Jazz A Louisiana Kitchen. The property sits directly across from Independence Events Center and near major shopping and dining areas, according to Block & Company, Inc. Realtors.
That stretch of Valley View Parkway saw other commercial dining shakeups this year, including the closure of the nearby Red Lobster in May amid broader national chain restructurings, as reported by Fast Company. Restaurants operating in Independence are subject to local regulation.
