A 68-year-old Stewartsville man died and a 71-year-old Iowa truck driver was seriously injured Tuesday morning after their vehicles collided at the intersection of U.S. Highway 36 and Missouri Highway 33 near Osborn, a DeKalb County junction where a prior fatal semi collision occurred three months earlier.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, the 68-year-old was driving a 2015 Jeep Compass south on Missouri 33 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and crossed into the path of an eastbound 2024 Kenworth semi-truck on U.S. 36. The Jeep's front end struck the driver's side of the semi, according to the patrol report cited by KQ2. The Jeep came to rest facing north in the westbound turning lane on southbound Route M, while the semi ended up on its passenger side in a ditch south of U.S. 36, facing east.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, per the same report. The Jeep driver, a Stewartsville resident, was pronounced dead at Cameron Regional Medical Center at 12:30 p.m., and his next of kin has since been notified, KQ2's digital content director Leah Rainwater reported. The semi driver, a 71-year-old man from Webster City, Iowa, was seriously injured, according to KQ2. Both vehicles were involved in the crash.
A Junction With A Deadly Pattern
The crash occurred at the same spot where a fatal collision killed two people just three months earlier. On June 7, a car collided with a northbound Peterbilt semi-truck at the same intersection, killing a 42-year-old Chillicothe woman and a 43-year-old St. Joseph man, per patrol crash records.
Nine months before that, on December 27, 2025, a 34-year-old Savannah driver failed to stop at the same stop sign and struck an eastbound Volvo semi-truck, which overturned in the median. That crash killed the SUV driver and injured two juvenile passengers, according to the patrol's report on the incident. Local outlet St. Joseph Post reported on the June collision.
Crash Investigation
The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash involving a commercial motor vehicle. The collision involved a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck at the U.S. 36 and Missouri 33 intersection, about two miles west of Osborn.
Tuesday's crash adds to the region's traffic fatalities. Statewide, no traffic-fatality totals are cited.
The crash came just after Labor Day. Whether MoDOT is weighing changes such as new signage, rumble strips, or a redesign of the U.S. 36 and Missouri 33 intersection remains an open question that has not been publicly addressed following the latest fatality.
