A federal jury has convicted a 31-year-old Kansas City, Missouri man of sex trafficking two minors, finding that he used force and coercion to move the children through hotel rooms across Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska between February 2022 and January 2023. Calvin Johnson was found guilty on multiple counts stemming from a scheme prosecutors say involved renting cars, booking motel rooms, and posting online solicitations for clients.
Jury Delivers Guilty Verdict on Multiple Counts
According to the Justice Department, Johnson was found guilty following the presentation of evidence at trial. Reporting from KCTV details that Johnson was convicted on two counts of sex trafficking of a child, two counts of sex trafficking accomplished by force, fraud or coercion, and two counts of transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. The station reports that Johnson forced and coerced minors into performing sexual acts with adults in exchange for money.
Court records reviewed on PacerMonitor show the case began with a sealed six-count indictment filed against Johnson, which was later modified so it would unseal upon his arrest. The docket also shows that a magistrate judge denied a defense motion for discovery in the case in mid-2025.
Investigators Traced Hotel Bookings and Digital Communications
The KCTV report describes how Johnson transported one victim to hotel rooms for sex acts and moved two minors across the three-state region using rented vehicles. Investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations were said to have found hotel booking information tied to Johnson spanning multiple states in the region, according to the station's account.
The same reporting states that victims' phones and social media accounts contained communications with Johnson indicating he was selling the victims for sexual services. Johnson also directed victims to have clients send him money through payment apps, and he kept those payments for himself, the outlet reports.
Case Emerged From a Traffic Stop and a Motel Search
Per the station's account, investigators first spoke to a minor connected to the case after a traffic stop in Missouri in April 2022. That contact led authorities to learn that the child had run away from the juvenile care system and had performed sex acts at Johnson's request.
Months later, in January 2023, law enforcement located a second victim inside a motel room, the report states. That victim was also identified as a runaway. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations continued investigating the case as it developed into the federal charges that led to this week's verdict.
