A Kansas City, Missouri, police motorcycle officer was rushed to an area hospital for treatment after being involved in a crash in Kansas City North on Thursday morning. Kansas City police said the officer is expected to be okay, though the crash occurred near Northeast 108th Street and Manchester Avenue.
The report was published Thursday by KMBC, which reported that Kansas City police confirmed a motorcycle officer was involved in the crash. Beyond the officer's expected recovery and the location near Manchester Avenue, further details about the Thursday incident, including the officer's identity, exact injuries, and how the crash unfolded, were not immediately available.
A Familiar Kind of Scare for KCPD's Motorcycle Unit
Kansas City's motorcycle officers have found themselves in similarly harrowing situations before. In a separate incident reported by KMBC, a KCPD motorcycle traffic officer was involved in a crash at East Gregory Boulevard and Troost Avenue at around 9:40 a.m. on a Wednesday morning. That report described the officer as traveling northbound on Troost without lights or sirens, non-emergency, when an SUV turned in front of him.
According to that account, the officer was unable to stop and struck the front of the SUV before being thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, and his condition was initially listed as critical. FOX4 later reported that the officer's condition was upgraded to stable shortly after 2 p.m. that same day. KCPD Chief Stacey Graves said the injured officer was tenured but declined to release his name, according to the station.
A Recurring Intersection for Motorcycle Officer Crashes
The Gregory Boulevard and Troost Avenue intersection has been the site of a comparable crash before. The Kansas City Star reported that a KCPD motorcycle traffic officer was critically injured near that same intersection in south Kansas City on October 16, 2024. In that case, police said the officer was leaving a traffic stop and traveling north on Troost when he struck a Toyota SUV that was driving in the opposite direction and turned in front of him.
That officer was also taken to a hospital with injuries initially considered life-threatening, per the same account. A local business owner ran over to help and summoned first responders by pressing the emergency button on the officer's radio, the Star reported. A stylist at a nearby salon estimated at the time that collisions in the area had been occurring about two to three times a month.
It remains unclear whether Thursday's crash near Northeast 108th Street and Manchester Avenue is connected in any way to the Gregory Boulevard and Troost Avenue incidents described in the earlier reports, or whether those reports refer to an entirely separate event. What is confirmed is that Kansas City police say the motorcycle officer hurt Thursday morning is expected to be okay.
