More than three months after capturing their first NBA championship since 1973, the New York Knicks still don't know if they're going to the White House. Head coach Mike Brown says the team remains internally divided on the question, with no timetable for a resolution.
The Knicks won the 2026 NBA Finals in June, but according to The Athletic, Brown said the team is still discussing whether to attend and intends to decide as a group rather than let ownership make the call unilaterally. The uncertainty stands in contrast to comments owner James Dolan made back in June, when he told WFAN that the White House had extended an invitation and that the Knicks had accepted it.
Dolan, a longtime friend of President Donald Trump, has been driving much of the momentum toward a visit. He invited Trump to Game 3 of the Finals, where the two sat next to each other in a suite as the Knicks lost that contest, and Dolan previously allowed Trump to use Madison Square Garden for a 2024 presidential campaign rally. On WFAN, Dolan said Trump is his friend and that he's proud to bring the team to the White House.
Trump's Front-Row Seat to the Finals
Trump's presence at Madison Square Garden in June wasn't a one-off gesture. He became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game when he watched Game 3 from Suite 47 on June 8, 2026, as Dolan's guest, according to PBS News, which reported that Trump was met with both cheers and security delays from fans entering the arena that night. Dolan's ties to Trump go back further still: he donated $300,000 to the Trump Victory committee in 2016 and another $125,000 in 2017, per the Daily News.
Five days later, the Knicks closed out the Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to clinch the title, with Finals MVP Jalen Brunson scoring 45 points in a victory that ended the longest championship drought in NBA history, as reported by the Associated Press. New York followed with a ticker-tape parade up the Canyon of Heroes on June 18, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani presented the team with keys to the city, according to the MTA — a celebration that unfolded well before any national political honors entered the picture.
Players Haven't Even Discussed It, Brunson Says
The gap between ownership's enthusiasm and the locker room's posture has been visible for months. Brunson told Variety in July that the Knicks hadn't discussed a White House visit as a team at all, a notably different account than Dolan's claim that the invitation had already been accepted. Guard Jose Alvarado, speaking shortly after the championship parade, told TMZ Sports he'd defer to his teammates, saying, “If there's a chance, I'm going wherever my teammate go.”
That tension mirrors what happened with the reigning champions before them. No NBA champion has visited the White House during either of Trump's presidential terms, and the 2025 champion Oklahoma City Thunder became the first team of his second term to skip the trip entirely, citing a timing issue during their March road game against the Wizards, according to The Guardian. The tradition dates back 63 years, to when President John F. Kennedy hosted the 1962-63 Boston Celtics in the Oval Office — a visit star center Bill Russell famously missed after oversleeping, per CBS News. President Joe Biden kept the custom alive as recently as November 2024, hosting the 2024 champion Celtics at the White House, and had previously welcomed the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks and 2022 Golden State Warriors as well.
December and March Offer Built-In Opportunities
The White House has confirmed it has been in touch with the Knicks and plans to host the team on a date still to be determined. Logistically, the door is open twice this season: the Knicks are scheduled to play in Washington, D.C. for the first time on December 18, 2026, with a second Capital One Arena date against the Wizards on March 16, 2027 — the two windows when a ceremony would traditionally slot into the road schedule.
Trump hasn't gone without sports company this year even as NBA champions have stayed away. He hosted the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2026 and U.S. Winter Olympians in August 2026, though CBS News noted that several Dodgers players, including Mookie Betts, still chose to skip the July ceremony.
For now, Brown has offered no timetable for when the Knicks will make their call, and the decision looms over a team still riding high off its title. Hoodline previously reported on Brunson's SNL stage cameo, part of a summer of celebration that included OG Anunoby recreating his Finals tip-in in Times Square and a Florida man's plea deal over a trashed cab during the title riot. Whether that celebration extends to a joint trip to Pennsylvania Avenue remains, in Brown's words, a question the team hasn't answered yet.
