Heat Advisory Covers Thursday Afternoon Through Friday
The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect for Knox County from 1 p.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday. Winds will be light, and rain chances remain near zero today, making the afternoon heat especially difficult for anyone working or exercising outdoors.
Friday will bring another sunny day near 98 degrees, with heat index values reaching about 104. Residents should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks, seek air conditioning during the hottest hours and check on older neighbors, young children and anyone without reliable cooling.
Weekend Temperatures Ease As Storm Chances Return
Temperatures will begin to moderate Saturday, but it will still be hot at around 96 degrees. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives after 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a high near 93 Sunday and a 20% chance of afternoon storms.
Labor Day will be somewhat cooler with a high near 90, though a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected after 2 p.m. The regional forecast warns that some Friday and Saturday storms could produce damaging wind gusts, while lightning and gusty winds remain the main concerns Sunday.
Cooling Resources Are Available Around Knoxville
The Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability lists cooling and daytime relief options, including Knox Area Rescue Ministries at 418 N Broadway and the Volunteer Ministry Center at 511 N Broadway. The guide also recommends resting in shade or air conditioning from noon to 6 p.m. and calling 911 for signs of serious heat illness such as confusion, fainting or severe dizziness.
