A 69-year-old Mastic man was stabbed to death inside his own apartment early Monday, and Suffolk County police say the person they arrested for it is his 33-year-old son. Edward Brown called 911 around 12:30 a.m. to report that he had been stabbed at his residence on Mastic Boulevard, but responders could not save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sage Arias-Brown, who lived separately in Lake Ronkonkoma, was arrested shortly after the stabbing and charged with second-degree murder, according to PIX11. Emergency responders from the Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company were the ones who arrived at the Mastic Boulevard apartment and attempted life-saving measures before Brown was declared dead, according to Newsday. Police have not identified a motive for the attack.
Son Held at Sixth Precinct Ahead of Arraignment
Arias-Brown was held at the Suffolk County Police Department's Sixth Precinct in Selden following his arrest, with an arraignment scheduled for Tuesday. The same account listed First District Court in Central Islip as the venue for the scheduled arraignment.

Suspect Arrested in Bank Robbery Just Months Earlier
This was not Arias-Brown's first brush with Suffolk County police this year. In May, four months before the fatal stabbing, he was arrested by Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives and charged with third-degree robbery after allegedly demanding cash with a note at a TD Bank in Lake Ronkonkoma, according to Daily Voice. That robbery reportedly occurred on Portion Road on May 8.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Arias-Brown faces a mandatory minimum of 15 to 25 years and a maximum of life in prison, since the charge is classified as a Class A-I felony under New York Penal Law ยง 125.25, per the Spodek Law Group. Second-degree murder is distinct from first-degree murder under New York law. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, led by Raymond A. Tierney since 2022, handles serious felony prosecutions, though no charging decision beyond the initial arrest has been detailed.
A Hamlet Confronting Another Violent Family Case
Mastic is the setting for the case. The killing adds to a string of intra-familial and domestic stabbings Suffolk County police have investigated across Brookhaven Town this year, including a fatal Farmingville stabbing of an estranged spouse in February and a Medford roadside stabbing case that led to second-degree murder charges in July.
