New Mexico State University's basketball arena is getting a new name, and a hefty new revenue stream to go with it. The NMSU Board of Regents voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve a deal giving White Sands Federal Credit Union naming rights to the Pan American Center, transforming the venue into the White Sands Federal Credit Union Arena at the Pan American Center for the next decade.
The Las Cruces-based credit union will pay NMSU $13 million over the life of the agreement, or $1.3 million annually, according to KRQE News 13. An ad hoc naming committee recommended the arrangement in a memo to NMSU President Valerio Ferme ahead of the regents' vote, as reported by 96.3 KKOB.
Every dollar of that annual payout is headed straight to NMSU Athletics, even though the Pan American Center has historically fallen under the university's Special Events Department, per the same KKOB report. The agreement also gives NMSU Athletics a new source of revenue.
A Credit Union With Deep Aggie Ties
White Sands Federal Credit Union is a Las Cruces-based institution with more than $400 million in assets and serves upwards of 35,000 members across southern New Mexico, according to the Las Cruces Bulletin.
That local presence helps explain why the naming rights landed with a hometown institution rather than a national brand. The arena's identity has evolved over time.
Lou Henson Court Stays Intact
Fans worried about losing a piece of program history can rest easy on one front: the basketball court inside the arena will keep its name. The playing surface was officially christened Lou Henson Court and will retain that designation beneath the new building name, according to NMSU Athletics. Henson remains part of NMSU's basketball history.
The Pan American Center dates back decades. Nearly six decades later, the arena's exterior identity is changing even as its most storied interior tribute holds steady.
How NMSU's Deal Stacks Up Statewide
NMSU's arrangement follows a similar move by its in-state rival. In February, the University of New Mexico signed a 10-year, nearly $17.5 million naming rights deal with Nusenda Credit Union, renaming University Arena “The Pit – Powered by Nusenda,” as reported by Credit Union Times. That deal pays UNM roughly $1.74 million per year, more than NMSU's annual take, though NMSU's overall term matches it at a decade.
The financial backdrop matters for a program navigating a tougher conference landscape. NIL demands and facility upgrades are reshaping college sports economics.
Exactly how the incoming funds will be divided among NMSU's individual sports programs, along with the timeline for replacing arena signage and the costs of that visual rebrand, remain open questions the university has not yet detailed publicly.
