A 22-year-old man was left in critical condition early Saturday morning after his Mercedes-Benz veered across a Las Cruces street, jumped a sidewalk, and slammed into a parked pickup truck. The driver was partially ejected through the windshield in the crash, which happened on the 1600 block of East May Avenue near Nevarez Street.
According to KTSM 9 News, Las Cruces police and fire crews responded to the crash report early Sept. 19. Police said the man was driving a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class eastbound on East May Avenue when the car crossed Nevarez Street, entered the southside sidewalk, struck a sign and a mailbox, and then veered left across the roadway before hitting a parked and unoccupied Ford F-350.
Both vehicles sustained major damage in the impact, the station reported. The driver was transported to University Medical Center of El Paso, where he remained in critical condition. Police believe he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and they say speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors.
Pattern of Serious Crashes on Las Cruces Roads
On Wednesday, a motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash with a car that temporarily closed part of Valley Drive at Rigsby Road, according to cbs4local.com. That crash happened Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. and shut down Valley Drive from Avenida de Mesilla to Boutz Road, with Rigsby Road also closed near the intersection.
The motorcyclist in that incident was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso, where they later died from their injuries. Their identity was not released, the outlet reported.
Another serious crash on Solano Drive near Lohman Avenue left a 26-year-old man critically injured after a 2015 Nissan Altima struck him while he was crossing the street around 7 p.m. on Jan. 5, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. Police believed at the time that the man was crossing several feet from the crosswalk. He, too, was flown to an El Paso hospital, where his condition remained critical.
No further details have been released about the East May Avenue crash, including whether the driver faces any charges or citations. Police have not disclosed the man's current medical status beyond the critical condition reported immediately after the wreck.
