A Lee County traffic stop led deputies to four people and an investigation into a nearby motorcycle burglary, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office. Amy Romeu, Eduardo Hernandez, Diego Bara-Arcia, and Osvaldo Ramirez-Triana were taken into custody after deputies found narcotics, burglary tools, a handgun with an altered serial number, and motorcycle parts in the vehicle, the office said.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office said deputies encountered the vehicle during proactive patrols, before the nearby burglary report had been fully worked. A search found narcotics and drug paraphernalia, bolt cutters, a pry bar and other tools, a handgun with an altered serial number, motorcycle equipment, gas cans, and license plates that did not belong to the vehicle or its occupants. Investigators linked the evidence to the burglary: a recovered plate was traced to the victim, and the motorcycle parts were identified as the victim's stolen property, the sheriff's office said.
Video from the search also captured an unusual detail that quickly drew attention online: a live fish swimming inside a bottle, according to KFOR. While the fish made for a strange visual in the deputies' footage, the case itself centers on the overt links between the vehicle's occupants, the burglary tools inside it, and the stolen motorcycle components tied to the nearby crime scene.
Charges reported by the sheriff's office
The Lee County Sheriff's Office said all four face charges of burglary, possession of burglary tools, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal mischief, grand theft, and loitering. The charges also include drug possession, drug-equipment possession, and a weapon offense.
Motorcycle theft in Florida
According to Carrier Management, citing the NICB’s 2022 Vehicle Type Theft Report, Florida had 4,563 motorcycle theft reports that year, the second-highest state total. That one-year figure does not show whether Florida’s totals rose or fell over time, provide a national total, or establish a trend in Lee County or explain this case.
The case began with a proactive patrol encounter.
Charges in the Case
The case also includes grand theft charges, and deputies found a handgun with an altered serial number in the vehicle.
